Fortune Cookie Friday: Wanna Get Away?
I might not have the most stressful job in the world, but there are days when I can’t wait for the weekend. Stress works its way into our lives, and all we want to do is take a nice quiet break. We can’t always take an extended vacation to a tropical destination, but a little bit of quiet time can help us refocus. It gives us a chance to breathe and prepare for the next day or next project.
There are many ways to enjoy some quiet time. Like the fortune states, time with friends or family can be an excellent respite from the daily grind. In the Baron house, we like to watch movies, play board games, or share stories around the table after dinner. When the weather is warm, we spend time in the backyard. Lawn games add a pleasant camaraderie to the evening, but we also like to sit and feed any visiting critters. Our family goes through a plethora of peanuts feeding the squirrels, chipmunks, and birds—not recommended for those with peanut allergies.
On days that I just want some alone time, I will find a quiet spot to rejuvenate. Many times I will curl up on the couch and read a book or hang out in my hammock listening to music. Sometimes I doodle in my spare time if I’m not working on a big illustration project. I even enjoy spending time playing Minecraft—thanks to my son. Although, I am more of the “what can I build?” type of player than making it to the end and earning rewards.
My favorite quiet pastime is walking in the woods. I could spend hours, days even, surrounded by nature. Add my camera, and I find it hard to return home. I take time to hike, snowshoe, or camp any chance I can get. Since I volunteer for Venture Scouts and the New York State Bluebird Society, I have plenty of opportunities.
Of course, there are other ways to relax. Some enjoy shopping, concerts, and even driving in their car. Participating in sports, even if they aren’t quiet, is a great way to blow off some steam. As long as the activity breaks up the monotony of our chores, it can have restorative effects. Whether we take a catch a nap or catch a movie, we should take some time to get away from the hustle and bustle of our busy routines.
