Fortune Cookie Friday: Step or Leap
Life is all about choices and the obstacles that we overcome. Making those decisions can be daunting, and taking that first step or major leap means change and the unknown.
Whatever the reason, if we find ourselves in uncharted territory, we can use different methods to overcome adversity. There is a certain balance between caution and courage regarding human decision-making.
When faced with large tasks, especially mundane ones, it can help to break the job into smaller, more manageable pieces. Each little step is easier to complete, and when we finish them, we can feel satisfied.
Consider our projects at work, school, or around the house. Many will require multiple steps before we can reap our rewards.
Most paychecks and grades require a little work before we can earn them. There are processes to follow or tasks to complete that show we know what we’re doing and prepare us for the next step.
Those yummy chocolate brownies don’t bake themselves. We follow a recipe that includes mixing a few things, putting the batter into a pan, and baking until done. I’ve also been told that one should let them cool before eating them—I tend to skip that step.
There will also be times when breaking things down won’t be advantageous, and we must throw caution to the wind and be courageous.
Former British Prime Minister David Lloyd George said, “There is no greater mistake than to try to leap an abyss in two jumps.”
If we are too cautious with important decisions or actions, we will stifle our potential and personal growth. Taking a leap of faith can be handy when considering challenges such as a new job, beginning a relationship, or dealing with that pesky spider over the bed.
We may not know the exact outcome of our decisions, but moving forward is better than standing still in the ever-changing landscape of our world. If we understand the delicate balance between caution and courage, we can adapt to whatever challenges we face.
