Fortune Cookie Friday: Adventure Awaits
I have always been intrigued by what was over the hill, around the corner, or behind the curtain. It’s not necessarily because I was curious; it was more about dispelling the unknown and breaking boundaries. Okay…there was a little curiosity involved.
There is so much to experience and enjoy in this world, and I don’t want to miss out. Life is an adventure, from investigating what lives in the hole under my shed to exploring caves in foreign countries.
Adventure can be found in just about anything if we open our hearts and minds to the wonders around us. Even something as simple as cracking open a fortune cookie and reading the little piece of paper inside brings me joy.
When I read today’s Fortune, I researched whether it was a quote by anyone in particular. Interestingly, the sentence was used as a lyric in the song “Land of Sunshine” by the alternative metal band Faith No More.
Lead singer Mike Patton mentioned in an interview that he pulled this line and others from a bunch of fortune cookies, along with some lines from the Oxford Capacity Analysis personality test offered by the Church of Scientology.
Patton also admitted he wrote “Land of Sunshine” and “Caffeine” while experimenting with sleep deprivation. Nonetheless, adventure can lead us to discover new things about the world and ourselves.
My hubby and I recently revisited our alma mater for our 30th reunion. It had been many years since we last visited, and everything looked very different. I was awed as much as when I first went there as a young college student.
Leaving my hometown after high school to travel far out of state was definitely an adventure. I had no idea what to expect or if I would succeed, but I got to experience new cultures and meet fascinating people. I also learned that I could grow stronger and wiser by stepping out of my comfort zone with classes or clubs.
We don’t have to travel to distant lands or risk our lives for an adventure. We can safely try new things at home. Movies, books, food, and even a different route to work can mix things up and show us a new perspective. The only risk we take is change.
Consider adding a little adventure to your life and see where it leads you. As C. S. Lewis wrote:
