Fortune Cookie Friday: Today Is A Good Day
Dealing with difficult times and loss can be challenging. Whether we lose our keys, jobs, or loved ones, we face adversity and must overcome it.
Overcoming a loss doesn’t mean we put something behind us, never letting it affect us again. Many times, feelings of anger, depression, and regret from a past event can well up inside us when we least expect it. This is normal, especially if what was lost played a significant role in our lives.
Everyone deals with sad news and loss differently. Some may not be affected by the little things, while others struggle with coping. Even a monumental loss or tragic news can devastate some, while others compartmentalize it to continue their daily routines.
I consider myself a realistic optimist. However, my optimism is anything but blind positivity like that of unrealistic optimists. I see the good in most things but recognize that not everything is perfect. I can acknowledge negativity but not dwell on it.
This is opposed to people who are optimistic realists. These people believe in having a realistic outlook but also see the potential for positive change.
In both cases, people combine optimism’s positive qualities with realism’s objective lens, but one quality is the root of their outlook. Nonetheless, blending optimism into our lives helps us deal with all the crud that comes our way—and life is full of it.
Each day we wake up, we should rise with gladness. We have the opportunity to live another day, to reach for our aspirations, to right our wrongs, and to hug the ones we love. This is a beautiful opportunity that no one should waste.
Consider this; instead of dragging our butts out of bed every morning complaining about whatever turmoil we carry, we can plant both feet on the floor and say, “Today will be a good day.”
If you want to take it up a notch like I do, you can say, “Muahahaha! I’m going to crush it at work. Victory will be mine!” I only recently changed to this quote after a chat about over-the-top villains on social media.
Take hold of the day. Make it yours. Learn from the past and remember those that have gone before us, but focus on all the good that comes from your experiences.
Today can be a good day, but only you can make it that way.
