Accidents Happen
I recently broke my foot while walking outside. I happened to step wrong and roll the foot and ankle which broke the fifth metatarsal on my right foot. After applying first aid and watching it swell up and bruise, I had an x-ray to confirm the fracture and find out how long the healing process would take.
I couldn’t have a cast applied but the doctor recommended I use crutches and stay off of it until it doesn’t hurt to put pressure on it. Sure! This was what some would call “throwing a wrench in the works”. As a busy mom, I had many duties to complete. All of these were postponed or handed to other members of the household. Since it was my right foot, I couldn’t drive a car for two weeks. Well, at least not safely. But all of this was bearable.
What really annoyed me the most was answer the popular question, “what happened?” I would tell the inquisitor that I broke my foot and that was followed by, “how did you do that?” Yes, it was a simple accident. I just wished it sounded more exciting than I stepped wrong. So I sat down and came up with some interesting, if not fictional, reasons I could use as a back story. Here are some of them:
Sports injury from soccer, baseball, skiing, or skateboarding.
- Motorcycle accident.
- Horseback riding accident.
- Kickboxing match…you should see the other guy.
- Fell from eight foot stilts during a Brazilian carnival.
- Breaking in a door whilst curtailing a hostage situation.
- Climbing Mount Everest, but I made back from the summit with the aid of the Sherpas.
- During a mad dash sprint for first place in a marathon.
- Fending off ninja squirrels trying to raid my bird feeders.
Of course, I can’t really use these as excuses; but I can always dream of excitement when mundane accidents happen.
