Winnie the Pooh Day – Not a Bother
In honor of beloved writer A. A. Milne, today we celebrate a cuddly holiday, Winnie the Pooh Day. Milne was the youngest of three brothers, born in London on January 18, 1882. Able to read at the age of two, Milne grew with a penchant for writing.
Based on his own son (Christopher Robin Milne), and his stuffed animal playmates, Winnie the Pooh first appeared on the printed page in 1926. The adventures of Pooh and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood, illustrated by artist Ernest H. Shepard, were all best-sellers and made Milne a household name.
Many people celebrate this day with events like a teddy bear’s picnic, where you can nosh on toast with honey. You could also visit Pooh Corner in Hartfield, East Sussex, where Milne wrote the book. On the other hand, maybe you would enjoy watching Winnie the Pooh come to life in one of the animated shorts of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977), by Walt Disney Productions.
For myself, I like to cuddle up in a comfy chair and read my copy of The Complete Tales & Poems of Winnie the Pooh (2001). I turn the pages and delight in Milne’s verses and Shepard’s illustrations, whilst drinking a warm cup of tea – with honey, of course. I giggle at Tigger’s escapades, cheer on shy, but brave, Piglet, and even connect with gloomy Eeyore. I am sure he would be thankful for noticing him.
