This was my illustration for the Nov/Dec 2024 edition of the National Science Teacher’s Association’s journal, Science and Children. I created the illustration to accompany Laura Shovan’s “Flood” poem in the “The Poetry of Science” column.
I’ve seen many floods, and I was concerned about how to depict this poem in my illustration. The editor requested I attempt a lighter side for my image. All I could imagine was the hope and gratefulness I’d seen from so many people who survived the devastation. They accepted the pain of loss and put it to work, rebuilding their lives.
I received this poem way before Hurricanes Helene and Milton were even low-pressure systems, and I believe there is always hope, especially if we work together.
